Tilmann Grawe -- Traffic Jam On the Runway
By Mari Davis
PARIS, Mar 14, 2003/ FW/ --- Tilmann Grawe's collection shown last Wednesday show great
promise from the beginning but fizzled out slowly as small mistakes were made which added
up and eventually took away from the collection.
With Didier Grumbach, President of the Federation francaise de la Couture sitting at the
front row, the soundtrack started with the words, 'All the colors are changing,' which set
the tone of the collection.
Divided into three sets - Day dresses, followed by Trousers from shorts to capri pants, and
finally evening wear - the logic of the show was impeccable. Unfortunately, theory was better
than practice.
The day dresses were in sorbet colors, and reminded you of the Jacquie Kennedy era of the
White House.
Tilmann Grawe then sent out pedal pushers and capri pants in leather, suede, and alligator
skin, paired with knee high boots, some of them extra high.
As he built up his collection, it became apparent that it was all about Hollywood glamour
circa 1950s and beyond.
His greatest strength came with evening wear starting with a pecan-colored gown with a square
keyhole on the side and held up with square silver buttons.
A black gown decorated with square fur which looked like a checkerboard all in black, followed
with a white gown done the same way.
The music changed to the crooner saying, 'stylish girl' and it would have been perfect except
for a model wearing black hotpants and long black coat came out in the middle of all the
evening gowns and she decided to stay in front of the cameras having her photo taken.
From there on, the show lost its beat. As more models came out, there was literally a
traffic jam on the runway, as the other models overtook the model all dressed in black
which reminded you of a biker girl.
As the last model came out dressed in a white gown that should have been a wedding dress,
she lost both of her 'trains' that were slung over her shoulder.
In the end, it looked like the show could have used some editing and better direction.
Which was really unfortunate because Tilmann Grawe really has a lot of talent but the show
was overshadowed by those little mistakes.
