Tracy Mulligan's Black & White Statement
By Boyd Davis
Once again, Tracy Mulligan presented a nostalgic collection for Fall 2001. With the roaring
1920s as inspiration, the speakeasies and flapper girls were updated for the roaring 2020s(?).
A predominantly black and white collection, floral appliqués were used as embellishments on
skirts and tops. Skirt lengths were usually below the knee, in either bias or A-line cut.
As a homage to the "transparent" trend, the designer sent a model on the runway with a
transparent tulle bodice decorated with floral appliqués, discreetly hiding the nipples and
showing just a hint of the breast, equivalent to wearing a low neckline. It still shows a lot
of skin, yet still very discreet!
Pants are low-waist and generously cut paired with a houndstooth jacket (reminiscent of Coco Chanel
during the early years). Turtleneck shirts and assymetrical neckline for tops were paired with
either pants or skirts.
My favorite was the black and white dress with wide leather waistband printed with paintbrush
slashes. Black organza wrapped the bodice and shoulder. I don't know where a woman could wear
it but is sure looked cool.
As always, the hair is a statement in itself. The models wore chignon and a headband topped
with a feather. Classic Tracy Mulligan!
