Paris, Oct 6, 2001/FWD/ --- A one-hour wait did little to diminish the enthusiasm of the
crowd (which included fashion author Lisa Eisner and photographers Mario Testino and Ellen
Von Unwerth) for the Dutch duo Viktor & Rolf, who presented their Spring 2002 collection
Saturday evening.
Even as the first look was halfway down the runway, to the sound of organs, the audience
could not wait to burst into applause – Vogue’s Andre Leon Talley sitting at the edge of
his front row eagerly praised Bridget Hall’s white knickered court-jester ensemble.
It was just the beginning of an array of larger-than-life church-going outfits, all sculpted
in white.
Wide-legged tuxedo trousers, sheer blouses and wedding-cake gowns were garnished
with enormous unfinished bows. Grand cape-like coats were embellished with Victorian collars.
Oversized buttons stuck on boxy ‘60s-style silhouetted suits, making them more Minnie Mouse
than Jackie O.
Heart cut-outs on high-waisted balloon skirts recalled Alice in Wonderland,
and the opaque white tights and white patent leather shoes, which were paired with all the
looks, only emphasized the cartoonish couture quality that gives Viktor & Rolf their design
appeal.
Adding to the theatrics of it all was the jewelry, weighty fish-charm chains that took on
shackle-like qualities as they clattered around the models’ wrists.
