PARIS, Oct 2, 2006 / FW / - In what arguably is the most dramatic and most beautiful show of the day, Viktor & Rolf unveiled their sumptuously elegant and opulent Spring 2007 collection with a live orchestra and crooner playing background music.
It’s a setting reminiscent of the 1950s big band era, when dancing is fashionable and not considered a sport. It’s the world of the genteel, the civilized and refined. And in the Viktor & Rolf universe, that world exists today.
In fact, to put it in real life terms, the setting is the big band era today if it has survived the past 4 decades. With that in mind, the male and female dancer executing a waltz to open the show was fitting.
And the crooner singing ‘It’s Only A Paper Moon’ to mark the beginning of the catwalk presentation, which is the second segment of the show is a seamless jump to the next part of the story.
Sculpted mini dresses in black & white, embellished with golden or silver stars that sparkle when light hits the encrusted crystals, snug fitting short-cropped jacket worn over tube top cocktail dresses. The bodices are taut, the skirts flaring fully with the help of petticoats.
And with the use of nude fabric, it was sexy without showing off anything. While the bodice looked ‘naked’ from afar, no skin was really shown. Case in point, the final exit – a drop down waist dress with a curtain of crystals making up the bodice; a nude catsuit actually covers the model’s upper torso. Hence, although the strings of crystals sway as the model moves, nothing was actually seen.
In here, Viktor & Rolf takes the audience to the climax of their tableau. It’s high society at its best in the Viktor & Rolf universe.
For the denouement, the lights dim, and fog covers the runway as a black screen with a bigger than life projected photo of their latest perfume being launched this season, ‘Antidote,’ a scent for men was shown.
Male models all wearing tuxedos come out on the runway, the orchestra playing a waltz, the pair dances, and the audience gives them a spontaneous applause.
The perfect ending comes – dynamic design duo Viktor & Rolf takes their bow to a standing ovation with a very optimistic and sweet rendition of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ playing on the background.
