Mar 25, 2002/ FW/ --- Fall 2002 is the third straight season that we have covered eveningwear
designer Yigal Azrouel.
Azrouel, who made his debut at 7th on Sixth is well known for his very feminine, almost
ethereal design, yet there is also structure.
When the big trend was the androgynous look, Yigal Azrouel stuck to his signature look, a woman
is a woman and should always be given a chance to show off her feminity.
Some of his eveningwear is worthy of walking on the red carpet at the Academy Awards. It is not a
matter of "if." It is a matter of "when."
So, this season, when the designer sent mostly daywear to the runway, it was a pleasant surprise!
He brought his keen eye for detail and masterful execution of draping and fit to a very wearable
daywear collection.
Starting off with chocolate brown pants and matching long coat, you start to think that the
designer has decided to go for structure instead of sheer and flowing this season.
The dresses he showed followed the same flow.
Then he does a turn-around and sends a layered chiffon skirt topped with a short-cropped jacket
with a fabric belt to make it softer!
You see a glimpse of the Yigal Azrouel that you know.
Azrouel showed soft and sheer, together with structured lines at the same time!
Under inexperienced hands, the show will not make sense. But with Azrouel's masterful execution
and well-thought of line-up of clothes and models, it turned out to be a pleasing surprise
each time a model comes out.
As usual, Azrouel shows a handful of men's clothes during his show. Whether it is eye-candy for the
female audience or to show that he can do excellent men's clothes, too, I will never know.
One thing I know though - this collection will be a commercial success from coast to coast.
