PARIS, Oct 13, 2002/ FWD/ --- After a monumental presentation of his main line in the
Paris Opera house on the eve of the July haute couture shows, Yohji Yamamoto didn’t rest on
his laurels when it came to his diffusion line, Y’s by Yohji Yamamoto.
In an underground theater in the Palais de Chaillot, Yamamoto’s sure hand produced perfectly
wearable clothes with an arty couture edge.
To the droning sound of the repeated electro lyric "We are the robots" came a procession of
semi-sheer black vest tops and black wide pants, each looking the same but slightly different.
When it was time for the main course Yamamoto’s taste was perfect.
With a basic silhouette of small on top and big below, or else just big, he sent out huge
creased coats with fat cargo pants and a very deep V-neck sweater, or maybe moss green silk
cuffed trousers or a slouchy black suit.
Amongst the profusion of black and beige Yamamoto incorporated couture elements from the
main line -- most beautifully as a purple jumpsuit knotted over the bust line in a big bow
and worn under a sweeping opera coat, or as easy bustle skirts worn with white shirts.
Waistcoats and tops with cut away backs added a gentle element of graceful sexuality that
never verged on the vulgar.
