Nov 25, 2004/ FW/ --- According to a recent American Express study, consumers have a lot to learn
about how to protect themselves against identity theft.
While 77 percent claim
they take precautions to secure their information, nearly half still make the
mistake of carrying their Social Security number in their wallet.
Identity theft can happen even to those who are careful. One consumer had a
$32,000 truck, a pricey apartment and a cell phone charged in her name without
even having her wallet stolen.
The identity thief stole her personal information
from a real estate application and racked up $50,000 in debt.
With the holidays fast approaching and identity thieves on the move, experts
have tips to help you protect your personal information:
- Be careful with whom you share your personal information.
- Shred documents before throwing them away.
- Avoid carrying your Social Security number.
- Review your credit bureau reports at least once a year.
Experts warn that Social Security numbers are the ultimate prize for
criminals. Don't reward them with the key to your identity.
