High School of Fashion Industries NEW YORK, Nov 1, 2001/ --- If you're tired of the same old stressed-out shopping experience, the hustling and bustling crowds, noise and long lines, it could be time to take a trip to New York's Seedhouse -- a calm, quiet, by-appointment-only retail showroom in a building on West 22nd Street.

Established nine years ago, it was formed to "aid special talent, to help not overtly commercial artists, designers and artisans work in unison in a unique way. My goal has always been to surround myself with individuals that inspire me in some way," explained founder and owner, Ellen Carey.

"I saw this house and it was more than I could afford but it was in such a lovely location and would offer me a way to grow my business as I could add a home and artisans to my assortment. The house dates from 1845 and has been a private home for most of its life. It has a lot of its original detail, six fireplaces, moldings and an original skylight on the top floor," Carey added.

Her assortment now includes fashion designers Collette Dinnigan, Megan Park, Olya Vintage, Peter Soronen, Scanlan & Theodore and A Detacher, accessories designers Diana Broussard, Jane Wheeler, Susannah Hunter and Clementine, and then art, furniture, housewares, baby items and gifts. Every piece in Seedhouse is special, handcrafted or one of a kind.

Carey began her career on Wall Street, then moved to PR at Barneys before moving to Italy to work with Romeo Gigli.

Always on the lookout for new talent, she still works as a freelance retail consultant and buyer.

Shoe designer Diana Broussard chose Seedhouse to show to the press. "It is such an unusual place," she said.

"It is so nice to see luxurious designs from fashion to housewares in one beautiful space. I don't think you'll find anywhere as innovative."
