DALLAS, Jan 10, 2001/ FW/ --- Screen and dividers can serve different purposes. It can be used in store windows as a background, or add interest in a floor display.

The photo above is used for both - as a background for an open store window and as a divider.

The folding screen act as "separator" between the sales floor and the store window!

You can make this screen in two-ways: (1) the easy way; or (2) from scratch.

The easy way is to go to a hardware store (Home Depot or Lowe's) and buy pre-made screen panels. They come in different sizes (height or width) and models. You just need to buy hinges (3 hinges per panel, hence for three panels you will need 6 hinges), paint or stain (your color of choice) and a brush.

Paint or stain the screen in an open place. Leave out to dry for 24 hours, then assemble by putting in the hinges. Once done, you can add photos or any decoration you want.

To make the screen shown above from scratch, you will need the following:

Materials needed
  • 20 pieces 1/2" by 2" by 6' high wood slats
  • 4 pieces 16" wide by 6' high plexi-glass (choose the color you like)
  • glue
  • screws and finishing nails
  • hinges
  • paint or stain and paint brushes
  • wood filler and caulk
  • sand paper

Tools Needed
  • drill
  • drill bits
  • hammer
  • miter saw

Instructions
  1. If you do not have a miter saw, ask the hardware store pre-cut the wood slats. You will need 16 pcs. 6' length and 32 pcs. of 14" length.
  2. You can also ask them to cut the plexiglass to 16" wide to 6' high.
  3. Paint or stain the wood. Allow to dry in an open space.
  4. Assemble each panel separately. On a flat surface, lay the 2 6'long wood slats along side each other 14" apart. Lay the 14" wood slats accross. Apply a dab of glue.
  5. Carefully lay the plexiglass on the wooden slats making sure that everything is aligned properly and that the wood cover the side of the plexi glass.
  6. Put dabs on glue on the remaining wood slats and carefully lay them on the plexiglass, making sure that it is aligned with the wooden slats on the other side.
  7. Use big clips to hold the panel you assembled so that the glue will hold them together. Allow 24 hours to dry or follow the glue manufacturer's instructions on how long the glue should be allowed to dry.
  8. When the glue is dry, drill small holes on the wood all the way through the plexiglass. Use the nails and/or screw to reinforce the hold of the glue on the panel.
  9. Put wood filler and caulk as needed. Use sand paper to smooth any bumps. Paint or stain as needed.
  10. Put hinges to the panels to join them together. And voila, you have a folding screen!
