Gianfranco Ferré Supports Milan’s bid for Expo 2015

MILAN, Mar 28, 2008 / FW/ — As already announced, Milan is bidding for Expo 2015 and Gianfranco Ferré is supporting Milan’s bid for the event with the maison’s planned participation at the gala party to be hosted by the Mayor of Milan. The gala will be held in Paris’ Palais de l’Opera National on Sunday, Mar 30.
The fashion element of the evening will be represented by both the “historic” collections and the latest ones of Gianfranco Ferré, as modeled by a selection of beautiful creations. Gianfranco Ferré will be the only fashion brand involved in the event.
Representatives of the authorities and diplomatic corps of the hundred and fifty voting countries are expected to attend, along with numerous celebrities and the media.
Originally called the World Fair or World’s Fair, the World Expo began its history in 1851 when the first official exposition under the auspices of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE).
From 1851 – 1938, the first era of the World Expo was centered on industrialization, as it focused on trade and technological inventions and advancements. From 1939 to 1991, the focus changed to ‘cultural exchange’ as the theme of the exhibition leaned towards issues of humankind. The fairs also became more future oriented and utopian in scope.
In 1992 until today, the focus had shifted to nation branding as the fairs were widely used as a platform to improve a country’s national images through their pavilions. For 2008, the Expo will be held in Spain, while in 2010 it will be in Shanghai.
Milan is bidding for Expo 2015. The five-year difference is because the BIE had decided to hold the fairs once every five years.
FIDM Students To Share Catwalk with Veteran Designers At ‘Discarded To Divine’ Fashion Show

DALLAS, Mar 27, 2008 / FW/ — Rebecca Howard, Marlowe Basset and Anne Sheldon Dupuaix, all of whom are students at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) will be sharing the catwalk with veteran designers Jessica McClintock, Colleen Quen, Nice Collective, Cari Borja, Verrieres & Sako, Michael Boris and Sara Shepherd in support of ‘Discarded to Divine’ fashion show that features ‘recycled’ fashion items.
Rebecca Howard’s creative interpretation of the organic works of Dale Chihuly transformed into a side-lacing corset. (photo above) Rebecca hand dyed and finished 7 pairs of women’s chinos into her 100% recycled design.
Marlowe Bassett combined upholstery fabric and a shirt into an adjustable costume representing transformation. (photo above) She was inspired by the elegant, striking lines of Dale Chihuly’s organically diaphanous glass art.
Anne Sheldon Dupuaix recycled chinos, cotton pants, tweed pants, a man’s jacket and a woman’s jacket into her shell jacket inspired Dale Chihuly’s “Seaforms” glass sculptures.
“I designed a jacket with a shell-like bodice that curls around the bust in a series of curved panels assembled together into a spiral shape. The sleeves resemble a cone shell. There are no side seams on the bodice, the shape of the garment is made by the curved construction seams that spiral around the body,” said Anne. “Matte & textured fabrics were chosen to evoke
