PARIS, Mar 4, 2008 / FW/ — In his press notes, Ralph Rucci mentioned that he had studied quantum mechanics, which is actually a branch of mathematics. And though this might surprise many, mathematics has been used in the design of Gothic cathedrals, Rose windows, oriental rugs, mosaics and tiling, just to name a few. So, why not in fashion?
Well, that’s exactly what Ralph Rucci did, as he transformed the ‘integral’ sign in Calculus to inverted seams shaped like waves that were used as inserts in the bodice, or as a focal point on the sleeves and shoulders.
For long time Ralph Rucci fans (like this fashionista), Fall 2008 is actually a continuation of his Spring 2008 collection in terms of development and direction. While the New York-based designer showed his signature kimono sleeves and open seam work, the new ‘quantum physics’ element in his design demonstrates Ralph Rucci’s never-ending search for excellence.
And like the Big Bang Theory that actually gave us our universe, Ralph Rucci’s mathematical view of fashion gives us an entirely new and refreshing vision of fashion’s future.
While other others are using high-tech materials or being influenced by sci-fi, Ralph Rucci went to the source – mathematics, which is perhaps the most novel inspiration this season.
