High School of Fashion Industries NEW YORK, Dec 21, 1999/ --- Located at the heart of New York's Fashion District, the High School of Fashion Industries is the only high school of its kind in the eastern seaboard of the United States.

The New York Times in "A High School Scorecard" article indicated that the High School of Fashion Industries (Fashion for short), "far outperforms other similar schools."

Fashion's curriculum devotes itself entirely to the world of fashion, from styling and design through business and marketing. As expected, it provides a complete academic program for all its students as an ordinary high school required by the Board of Education.

High School of Fashion Industries What makes Fashion unique is that the students can "major" in a specialized subject, giving them an edge when they choose fashion as a career and/or a college degree.

Students can major in Fashion Design, Art or Merchandising. For Fashion Design majors, they can specialize in Fashion Art, Draping, Patternmaking, Construction, Bodywear and Intimate Apparel, Historical Costume Design, or Theatrical Costume Design.

Art Majors can specialize in Textile/Interior Design (Silk Screening, Printing & Weaving, Surface Design, Interior Design, Drafting); Jewelery Design (Jewelry Design, Casting & Wax Carving, Stone Setting, Gemology, Enameling Techniques); Fine Art (Drawing, Painting, Illustration, Computer Graphics, Advertising Design, Advanced Studio, Business of Arts, Roots of American Design).

Merchandising majors can specialize in Fashion Merchandising or Visual Merchandising. All Merchandising majors have to take Apparel & Accessories, Keyboarding, Business Communications, Introduction to Occupation, Financial Information, Processing, and Business Law.

Those who choose to specialize in Visual Merchandising takes the additional courses of Visual Merchandising, Store Planning, Point of Purchase Display, Window Design, Exhibition Design, and Materials & Techniques.

Students who choose to specialize in Fashion Merchandising take Business Analysis, Business Computer Applications, Marking 1 & 2, Business Ownership, Financing Information Processing, Marketing Honors Program, Fibers & Fabrics, Boutique Marketing Lab and Visual Communications.

To enter the High School of Fashion Industries, the student should be a resident of any of the boroughs in New York City. He or she must file an Admissions Application with the Guidance Counselor of his or her current school by October. There is an admission exam and all students must take the exam to be considered for admission. The exams are held during December and January.

The student should bring his or her porfolio (a collection of at least 10 original work) during the admissions exam. For more information about admission, please contact the High School of Fashion Industries.
