NEW YORK, Aug 24, 1999/ --- The Fashion Institute of TechnologySM is a State University of New York college of art and design, business and techology. Founded in 1944, as the answer to the recognized needs of the fashion industries for professionally prepared people, F.I.T.® is a unique institution.
In 1951, the Fashion Institute of Technology became one of the first community colleges under the program of the State Universiy of New York empowered to grant the Associate in Applied Science degree. In 1975, the college was permitted to confer Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees. In 1979, it was authorized to grant Master's degrees.
FIT is a public institution, receiving its principal financial support from the State and City of New York. It is a specialized college which prepares men and women for careers in fashion and its related professions and industries, and also provides leadership, research, and other services to those professions and industries.
Located in midtown Manhattan (Seventh Avenue at 27th Street), it almost sits at the heart of the fashion industry. The college serves more than 12,000 American and international students yearly who attend day, summer, Winterim, and evening sessions. It offers 30 degree programs, all developed in response to industry's needs.
