May 1, 2002/FW/ -- Alcoa announced today that it has begun selling the Alcoa Guide Rail
System™, a new easy-to-install product designed to
direct people safely away from areas containing mobile equipment, machinery or
other potential hazards. The versatile, modular system can be installed both
indoors and outdoors in a wide range of applications, including:
- Plants, factories and warehouses as protection on decks, walkways,
mezzanines and loading docks
- Stadiums, theme parks and transit centers - any setting where safe
separation of pedestrians is critical.
The Alcoa Guide Rail System is
priced significantly below comparable steel systems. It is available from Alcoa
or its authorized distributor, R & B Wagner, a leading provider of railing
systems for architectural, industrial and commercial uses. "Our
commercialization efforts are currently focused on North America with an eye on
expanding into European markets," said Ken Thomas, Manager-Business Development.
"The Alcoa Guide Rail System integrates our knowledge of workplace safety,
engineering and manufacturing expertise, and reaffirms our commitment to the
safety of our people and environment," Thomas continued.
In 2001, Alcoa locations worldwide achieved a Lost Workday (LWD) rate of 0.16, a rate that is
10 times better than U.S. manufacturing.
The fully integrated Alcoa Guide Rail System, which was initially designed
and manufactured by Alcoa for its own use, features interchangeable components
that assemble easily into standard or custom configurations and lengths.
Horizontal guide rails, vertical posts and corner adapters are made of heavy
gauge Alcoa 6061-T6 extruded aluminum, powder-coated in UV weather-resistant
safety yellow.
The guide rails are available in 5', 10' and 20' lengths. The
vertical posts include a protective top cap and corner post adapters to
accommodate corners at any angle. A swing arm gate accessory is also available
in various sizes.
Components of this patent-pending system are readily assembled and installed
with basic hand tools. Pre-punched holes facilitate rail mounting and base
installation. The rail-mounting hardware made of zinc-plated steel - is part of
the standard package.
