May 5, 2002/FW/ -- There is an intelligent shopping cart. It literally stops on its tracks
if a customer tries to leave the store with merchandise on its bottom tray that has not
been paid for.
Bottom tray losses on shopping carts represents about 2% of profits, according to the
retail industry estimates.
And this could be prevented. Most of the time, a customer forgets that there is merchandise
on the bottom tray of the cart. And the cashier/checker does not see it. The customer pays
for everything except the merchandise on the bottom tray, leaves the store and does not
even realize that there is unpaid for merchandise.
With the Gatekeeper shopping cart, the new VerifEye System uses state-of-art optical sensing
technology to produce the industries most accurate bottom tray verification system available.
When a customer pushes a shopping cart with itmes on the bottom tray through the check out lane,
the system automatically senses the product, causing the shopping cart to stop.
Cashiers can then check the system for merchandise and release the locked cart.
To increase awareness, standalone or point-of-sale, real-time digital images or audio
messages can also be added to notify the customer or cashier of the detected merchandise.
In addition, the system can be utilized in preventing shopping carts from leaving the parking lot.
