LONDON, May 17, 2005 / FW/ --- The shopping district in the heart of London is generally called Bond Street, although of course, it is made up of several streets - Oxford, Bond, Regent, Picadilly and Soho, Knightsbridge and the Markets.
Bond Street is named after Sir Thomas Bond from Peckham, who redesigned the area during the
late 1680s after the Clarendon House in Picadilly was torn down.
So, although you see the sign, New Bond Street, it actually not new at all.
It all started at Oxford Street which follows the path of an old Roman road that quite
literally led to Oxford.
One of the streets that branches from Oxford is Bond Street. In 1738, the whole area was
already thriving as a shopping mecca.
Over 200 years later, it is still the place to shop while you are in London.
New Bond Street is a few minutes walk from Bond Street Station, connected by pedestrian-only
South Molton Street, and Old Bond Street is the short section at the Southern end which
joins Piccadilly.
If you have plenty of money to spend and want to sport the very best in designer clothes then Bond Street is the ideal place to go for some expensive retail therapy.
Often an area chosen by celebrities on a spree, it is one of London's most exclusive shopping meccas.
