MILAN, May 20, 2005/ FW/ --- When it comes to accessories, shoes is a class by itself. From real life examples like Imelda Marcos famous for her 2000 pairs of shoes to fictional characters like Carrie Bradshow of ‘Sex & The City’, the consumers’ love affair with shoes is well documented.
So, it is not surprising that shoes are usually featured in store windows, whether as a stand-alone display or part of the ‘total look’ being presented.
When presented as part of a total look, shoes usually complement the garment on display and are either worn by the mannequin or lie at the foot of the form. Usually more than one pair is shown done for both impact and to show more merchandise.
When shown alone, visual merchandisers can be creative, such as making special boxes for the shoes.
It also affords showing several pairs at one time, usually the same style in different colors, or just the same ‘genre’ of shoes such as sneakers, stilettos or boots.
It can also be that all types of shoes are shown. But, if you are doing this, make sure that the display does not become cluttered. Use risers to differentiate the height.
When shown with other merchandise such as belts, matching them also makes sense. Remember, you are trying to sell a total look!
