LONDON, May 18, 2012/ — If you’re off backpacking this year, or the thought has popped into your mind, you’ve probably been thinking about lounging on the beach. White sand and crystal clear water.

Sounds perfect doesn’t it? A lot of your trip will be made up of exploring new cultures, testing yourself in different environments and gaining a worthwhile experience. But there’s nothing like spending days on end on a deserted beach.

So, chuck your swimwear in along with your Lonely Planet and off you go to check out as many of these perfect beach spots as you can.

Goa

Goa is often referred to as “India for beginners”. It’s a great place to start your Indian backpacking adventure. You’ll find loads of travellers, a vibrant party scene and of course amazing beaches. Stretched along India’s west coast, Goa’s shoreline is stunning.

From the tranquil Baga Beach in the north, to the livelier Calangute further south – Goa has the perfect blend of character and calm.

Thailand

Southeast Asia is a haven for backpackers, with no destination more popular than Thailand. The question of what makes it so popular is a difficult one to pinpoint. There’s stunning food, intriguing culture, intoxicating local colour and of course some of the best beaches you’ve ever seen. Some of the best include Railey, Maya Bay, Hua Hin and Sairee.

Everyone who heads to Thailand is looking for paradise, an untouched beach just like in the novel. Unfortunately it’s not really possible anymore with the onset of mass tourism. Heading to other countries in the region like Vietnam and Cambodia you may stand a better chance.

Australia

The east coast of Australia is one of the top destinations in the world for backpackers. Whilst many after first arriving in Sydney flock to Bondi, it’s actually less spectacular than you’d expect and a little disappointing.

If you’re in Sydney head to the northern beaches like Manley, Balmoral and Dee Why. Further along the coast you’ll find the likes of Rainbow beach, the sunshine coast and perhaps the jewel in the crown; Whitehaven beach.

Brazil

When looking to Brazilian beaches you may instantly think of Rio, but one of the world’s top backpacker destinations has so much more. If you’re lucky enough to spend some time in this South American wonderland you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches. Our favourites are Alter do Chao, Fernando de Noronha, Arpoador, and Bonete.
